Tips On Training Aggressive Dogs
Tips On Training Aggressive Dogs
Aggression is instinctive to dogs. This attribute of dogs evolved over many centuries ensuring their survival in the wild. Selective breeding and domestication processes have minimised and refined dog aggression. Below are some reasons why your dog could be displaying aggressive behaviour.
What is the cause of dog aggression?
Many factors can cause aggression in dogs but the most common is a lack of socialisation with other people and the issue of dominance.
Stranger aggression:
It is instinctive for a dog to be cautious and suspicious. If your dog isn’t used to being in unfamiliar situations it may become quite apprehensive around strangers and new environments. Make time to expose your dog to new people and situations and reinforce these experiences in a positive way. Browse our Dog Training Zone Review for more ideas to deal with aggressive dog behavior.
What can I do about dog aggression?
From a young age your dog needs to be socialised in order to feel comfortable in unusual situations. Make sure you include other people and animals in your choice of experiences. Positive experiences like this will reinforce in your dogs mind that meeting new people and going to new places is ok. Socialising your dog doesn’t need to be stressful. At puppy pre school your dog will be exposed to new people and new dogs. When you and your puppy feel comfortable around new dogs and people you will be able to expand your area of socialisation. Socialisation is a necessary process for the rest of your dogs life.
Aggression around family members:
It is usual for dogs to react aggressively towards their own family members when they feel something of theirs is being threatened. Resource guarding is the term used for this behavior. If your dog gets snarly or growls at you when you are near where it is eating or playing with a toy, then you know you have a resource guarding problem. This is caused by a misunderstanding about where your dog fits in to the pack. Remember, dogs are pack animals. Packs are structured according to power and position in relation to everyone else in the pack. Since your dog does not have a dog family, it will rank itself against its human family and this ranking will tell it how to behave at all times. If your dog is behaving aggressively then it perceives itself to be at the top of the pack. If o

n the other hand, your dog percieved itself to be a lower ranking member of the family, it wouldn’t dream of growling at you when you are near its food or toys. It is up to you to reinforce in your dog that you are the leader and it is a lower ranking member of your pack.
What can I do about my dogs aggressive behavior?
Rebuild your authority with your dog by regular and consistent obedience training work. Short and regular training sessions are critical to effective behaviour modification. The more enjoyable you make these sessions, the more your dog will want to please you and remember to use lots of praise and treats.
