Dogs have been part of the lives of men and women since 10,000BC, probably domesticated from wolves, jackals or some other distant relative; however, scientifically there is no doubt they all have a common canine ancestor.

Some have made it their life’s ambition to breed and raise wonderful, beautiful dogs. In 1884 in Great Britain, the Kennel Club was established evolving from a group of dog loving enthusiasts. Once this group got together, standards began to be established for various breeds. In the American Kennel Club (AKC) the breeds are categorized into eight groups.

Working

Herding

Sporting

Hound

Terrier

Non Sporting

Toy

There is also a miscellaneous class This class is for dog breeds from around the world whose breed has not been officially recognized by the AKC. Some of these breeds include the Boykin Spaniel, Redbone Coonhound and the Pyrenean Shepherd among others.

Dogs have proven themselves to be our friends, companions, caretakers and protectors. All around us we see these partners doing there duties every day. They find lost persons, track illegal drugs, lead the blind and assist the physically disabled. Now there are also therapy dogs, that can bring relief to the recovering and can even predict the onset of certain conditions, such as seizures. Some dogs have been trained to sniff for cancer and some, used by exterminators, can sniff for termites.

But for most of us, these furry four legged creatures, coming in all sizes, keep us company, welcome us home, give us their love and loyalty. Where would we be without them?
