There are now a number of heartworm medicines for Dogs available. Some are in a simple tablet form while others are based on a topical solution applied externally. The choices can be a little daunting if we do not know anything about the different brands that are available. There are a few top brands to choose from as well as the generic brands.
Before making a purchase it is advisable to consider exactly what you want from the medicine. Some brands will also contain active ingredients to eliminate intestinal worms. Hookworms and roundworms can be a problem for some Dog owners so it may be preferable to have one tablet that stops both heartworms and other worms that may be a problem. These tablets are much more expensive than a simple heartworm treatment though so it is only advised to use them if needed.
Generic heartworm medications can see very dramatic savings and it is well worth considering these if all you need is a treatment against the larval stages of the worms that are passed to Dogs via the mosquito. These generics contain the active ingredient Ivermectin and perform just as well as the more well known names that are often associated with this preventative measure. It is down to personal choice but never be afraid to consider the cheaper alternatives. As long as the active ingredient is the same there is absolutely no increased risk to your pet by using a cheaper alternative.
